Lake Argyle / Kununurra / Wyndham 25th April - 4th May 2021
During our time at Lake Argyle we took the time to explore the many dirt roads on our way out to the main highway. We came across some great lookouts and beautiful waterholes as well as some aboriginal artwork in some caves we came across. We did consider staying a few nights in Kununurra but as it is only 70km into Kununurra we decided to just do day trips to visit the surrounding areas.
Kununurra is located on the Ord River and is part of the Ord River Irrigation system, so interesting to visit the Diverstion Dam that helps contains the flow of water from Lake Argyle.
Whilst in Kununurra we visited:
-Ivanhoe crossing which is a really famous causeway that used to be the main Kununurra to Wyndham road – great fun if you haven’t done many river crossings. I think we went over and back about 3 or 4 times – Great fun.
– Kununurra also has a great jewellery shop that has some of the famous Pink Diamonds from the Argyle Diamond mine – which is now closed. It’s really nice to try on a $225,000 ring and see what the feel like – notice i said feel like!! (Lucky it never got stuck !!!).
– We visited the Sandalwood shop as most of the area grows Sandalwood trees, so interesting to see what they actually do with them.
– Hoochery Distillery is also a great place to visit and have a few samples of there delicious rums and other specialty brews – YUM 😋
There are also lots more shops and sites to visit around Kununurra these were just a few of our favourites.
We also took a drive out to Wyndham after our flight over the Bungle Bungles as we did a 7am flight and was back in Kununurra by 9.30am and it is only another 85km further up the road. There is a spectacular lookout called Five Rivers Lookout which is well worth a visit as the views are amazing. There is also a big crocodile if you are one of these people that is doing the “Big” thing trail. You will see it as you enter the town of Wyndham. There is also a great little museum with really friendly staff that is well worth a visit. Funny story whilst visiting the museum, i went to the loo and lucky i looked before I sat as there was a green tree frog looking up at me!!!
On the drive back from Wyndham we took a detour out to Marlgu Billabong where there is a bird watch platform – wow there were birds of all types here, well worth a visit and a great place to sit for awhile and count the many different varieties of birds.
Another interesting this we came across was the Lake Argyle Swim which happened to coincide with our visit, it runs generally on the first Saturday of May. They do a 20km and 10km swim and people come from all over Australia to compete, so the Resort/Caravan Park swelled from about 100 people to 700 over the weekend. Amazing hearing all the stories from various competitors who swam the race and apparently had it on a bucket list to do (Whatever floats your boat I guess !!!)
We really enjoyed our stay at Lake Argyle Resort /Caravan Park, the views are just spectacular and sitting in that amazing infinity pool looking at these views just takes your breath away – as well as the cold water in the pool !!!!
Fantastic place but time to move on……….El Questro here we come !!
