Kalbarri WA

Kalbarri, wow what can I say this was probably one of our favourite places after the Kimberley’s in WA.  We could have quite easily spent a few weeks here, but unfortunately we were only able to get 8 nights here.

The coastline & national Park are truly spectacular here.  We spent most of our time here walking the many walking trails both along the coast and inland in the national Park.  The coastal walks are just stunning with the spectacular rocky cliffs with huge waves pounding the rocks below.  We would walk along the trails and sit watching the massive waves roll in and smash against the cliffs.  You could also spot plenty of whales in the distance, on one occasion we counted about a dozen of them swimming in the area.  We did Mushroom Rock a few times as it was our favourite walk, but all of them were spectacular in their own ways.  The wildflowers on these walks were pretty amazing too, so many different colours!!

We also spent a couple of days our in the National Park checking out the beautiful gorges, Nature’s Window and the Kalbarri Skywalk.  From Natures Window there is a 8km track called The Loop, this was an amazing walk with a bit of everything, from rock climbing to sand walking to scaling cliff faces.  You are hiking in a gorge alongside the Murchison River so there was plenty of challenges but also plenty of beautiful scenery and carpets of wildflowers.  The Skywalk itself is pretty spectacular but a little scary when you walk out on it and can see through the grated floor to the Murchison river metres below.  It was also a little daunting when you could feel the structure moving when people were walking around on it !! (Jeff wanted to come back when it was blowing a gale to see how much it really moved !!)

We stayed at the Kalbarri Tudor Holiday Park which is a great place to base yourself as it is within walking distance to everything you need in town.  We did discover the best fish & chips we had had the whole time we had been away at the Kalbarri Fish & Chip Shop (YUMMY!!).  A great little town with everything you need within walking distance of everything. There is also pelican feeding here everyday at 8.45am.  The day we went there were about 10 of them wandered up to wait for a fish or two !!

Whilst in Kalbarri we took a drive down the coast to the famous Pink Lake – Hutt Lagoon at Port Gregory and wow we were not disappointed.  I don’t reckon either of us had ever seen such a pink lake, it was amazing to see the footage from the drone.  We also visited the little town of Horrocks and also checked out the Lynton Historical Site, which was established in 1853 as a Convict Depot providing labour for mining and agriculture in the area.  Apparently this town also has a link to The King and I (movie) as Anna who became the governess of the King of Siam’s children had originally lived here with her husband prior to 1856 – WOW!!

We were sad to leave this place as we enjoyed our stay here and the weather was pretty amazing whilst we were here too……………Next Stop Geraldton!!!
