Broome / Cable Beach - May - June 2021
Derby to Broome was only 125km down the road, so a fairly easy drive. We arrived in Cable Beach at the RAC Beach Holiday Park where we had managed to get a site for a week. Not a bad park, but right on the flight path so fairly noisy. Imagine how bad it would be if the world was Covid free !!! Otherwise the park was really good with a great pool and within easy walking distance to the beach and other local restaurants and only a 5 minute drive into Broome.
We spent the first few days just walking Cable Beach as the beach is just stunning and the sunsets each night are amazing. There also happened to be a lunar total eclipse on May 26th which was spectacular to watch and then two days later we got a stair case to the moon. This is a natural phenomenon which occurs when a full moon rises over the exposed mudflats of Roebuck Bay. We ventured down to the Moon Markets at Town Beach in Broome to watch the phenomenon and wow it is just amazing. We are hoping we will be here at the end of June to witness another one.
The tides here are just amazing, they come in and go out so quickly. You can drive along cable beach and pick a spot to watch the sunsets and watch the camels doing there walks along the beach. I don’t think i have ever seen so many camels in one spot and with so many people on board, oh and the cars along the beach on sunset, well its like a car park !! Just beautiful to find a spot and get that perfect shot of the pearl lugger that cruises in the harbour and the camels walking along the beach right as the sun sets.
We took a drive out to the Willie Creek Pearl Farm and did there pearl farm tour. The road in was a little rough but hey we are in the Kimberley’s !! Wow what a fantastic tour, they give you a full run down on the history of the pearling industry and the whole procedure from the beginning to the end. You even get a boat ride in the stunning waters around Willie Creek to check out how the oysters are suspended in their natural environment. We even saw the local crocodile that roams the area along with his couple of mates. The tour also includes a yummy morning tea!! We also saw a oyster being opened and the pearl removed – which incidentally was worth $3600 so not a bad days work for that little guy. After the tour they take you into there shop to check out all the jewellery and they also give you a 15% discount on some of the jewellery. I was a bit spoilt as Jeff bought me a pearl pendant with an Argyle diamond – all totally from the Kimberley’s, so i will have a forever momento of our time spend here in the Kimberley’s.
We shifted caravan parks after the first week and moved about a 1km down the road to the Cable Beach Caravan Park, this is a huge park with about 500 sites and as we are on the back fence it is about a 500m walk to the front gate. The sites are big though and the pool is huge, and its not so close to the airport. We have managed to get three weeks here so we are quite happy with out spot.
Another tour we have done is the Eco Beach Experience tour. This was a full day tour. We were picked up from the caravan park and taken to Gantheaume Point where we jumped aboard Karma IV a huge Catamaran and sailed for two hours across to Eco Resort where we were given a tour of the resort and lunch. Then we jumped back aboard and sailed further out looking for any marine life on the way back to Cable Beach. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to spot any whales or dugon’s but it was still a fantastic way to spend the day !!! The whole tour was about 9 hours as we didn’t get back to shore until about 5.30pm. The food was amazing and drinks were not expensive. Great days exploring the bay.
We have also spent a few days just exploring Broome with its China Town area and the many pearl shops and a variety other shops but i will continue that in my next blog……….
