We decided to move down the coast a bit to Emu Park which is a pretty little coastal village about 25km from Yeppoon. We stayed at the Fishermans Bay Caravan Park (Discovery) which is only a stones throw from the beach and a small walk to cafe’s and supermarket. An excellent spot to spend a week or two.
We spent a lot of the week just walking along the long white beaches and walking along the beautiful Memorial walk that goes around the bay and shows the most spectacular views across to the many Whitsunday islands on the horizon.
We did however explore a couple of places along the coast, one being the Capricorn Caves or The Caves. We did a Cathedral tour which was about a 45minute tour down into the caves and then into a very large cave where they have set up seats and a sound system to demonstrate the perfect acoustics of this natural cave. They apparently do weddings and other special events in this part of the caves. On the way out you zig zag through narrow passages and over a couple of suspension bridges to get back out of the caves. It’s a great way to experience the caves and well worth a look if you are in the area.
We also took another drive to Rockhampton to check out the botanical gardens and the zoo, which is located in the Botanical Gardens. Unlike most zoos this is a free zoo and although we probably didn’t see it at its best as they are undergoing a lot of repairs and maintenance work it was well worth a look. We have told ourselves to pop in and have another look when we come back through the area next year. The Botanical Gardens are beautiful to wander through and a great way to spend a day.
A funny for the week:- Jeff decided it was beer o’clock and grabbed a beer out of the fridge and sat back in his chair – of which after having a sip he tried to put the stubby into the drink holders in his chair, he met with a bit of resistance whilst trying to do this and when he looked down a big green frog was looking up at him – Let’s just say I don’t think i have seen him jump out of his chair so quickly !!!! (Photos below of his new mate !!)
Emu Park has been a very relaxing week, probably the last one we will have for awhile as we leave here tomorrow and start making our way down the coast to Noosa and then home……..
