21st - 22nd September, 2020
In the early hours of the last few morning we have had some terrific thunderstorms and lots of rain. One night we had 48mm in just a few hours, hard to believe how quickly and heavily it comes down here. The lightening is also very spectacular. Of course because of all the rain the weather has become very humid and hot and they are now predicting that the wet season is going to be early as the build up has begun. We on the other hand have decided it must be time to move on !!
Over the last few days we have visited the Botantical Gardens which was really beautiful and they have a fantastic information centre that tells the history of the gardens and also a run down of the wet and dry seasons. We spent a few hours wandering through the gardens looking at all the beautiful water features and many different plants. The Water lily were especially beautiful.
On another day we visited the Darwin War Museum. This is a very informative museum telling the full history of the bombing of Darwin and also Australia’s involvement in the 2nd World war. The first stop in the museum is to watch the very informative film on the bombing of Darwin. There is also a lot of interactive stories that you can listen to from people that told there story of their involvement in the bombing of Darwin. Very interesting to hear how people reacted and were involved in the bombings. Not only is there a lot of interesting stuff indoors but also a very big display outside also – made up of lots of army vehicles and a wide range of guns used to protect Darwin during this time. Well worth a visit as I have learnt a lot about that part of our history much of which I didn’t realise had a happened as I don’t ever recall this being taught at school.
We were hoping to do the Tiwi Islands whilst we were here but when we made enquires we were told a lot of the island tourist stuff and the shops are not operating at the moment and they suggested we do this the next time we visit Darwin. Bloody COVID !!!
Leaving Darwin on Monday 28th September and heading down south to Threeways and then across the Queensland border. The beaches of Northern Queensland are calling us !!!!
