We travelled from Mantaranka to Katherine (117km).Our aim was to find a caravan park that had green grass and shady trees as we were becoming a bit over red dust and rocks as a base for the van. BOAB Caravan Park near the town centre provided all this and more. Great little caravan park to base yourself for a few days in Katherine.
A must to do in Katherine is the Katherine Gorge cruise (Nitmiluk Gorge). The gorge is a 30 minute drive out of the town and into the Nitmiluk National Park. The gorge boat cruise was a 2hour cruise through two gorges of which the scenery was spectacular. As the water is low during the dry season you have to walk about 500m at the end of the first gorge to get to another boat in the second gorge. The walk was an easy walk and the scenery between the gorges was amazing. Nice relaxing way to spend a morning as we did the 9am cruise. The commentary provides lots of interesting information about the gorges and surrounding area. Hard to believe that whilst on the cruise the guide is pointing out high water marks way above our heads that have occurred in previous wet season, some of the points are at least 9m above – Unreal. Well worth a visit. On our walk back to the car from the cruise we came upon a mother and baby wallaby feeding on the lawns around the information centre – Cute!!
We also did a drive out to the Edith Falls where there is a couple of waterfalls feeding into a huge waterhole. Beautiful place to visit as there is lots of walks and lots of green grass to sit and have a picnic. We were feeling extremely lazy and just took a short walk around part of the falls. Nice spot to visit.
Another thing that is hard to comprehend is when you drive over the bridge in Katherine, the water seems so far below, but then you notice the water marks showing the water has come the more than 16m up and flooded over the bridge – Now that is hard to comprehend !!
Katherine itself is a pleasant enough town with a Woolworths to stock up on those much needed groceries before heading to Litchfield National Park for a few days.
Also much to Jeff’s joy there was a Coffee Club for his much needed coffee fix !
